Why Soft Skills Matter

Signature Moments

As we move from the information age to the conceptual age, effective people (soft) skills are in higher demand than ever before.

In critical situations the strength and style of your communication skills can mean the difference between success and failure.  These jugular business and social events are your signature moments.

Hard skills are based on precision, accuracy and routine. The defined ways of performing may be manualized or universally understood. Accounting and computer programming are good examples of hard skills. Hard skills are vital to our success, they are the things we get done.

To maximize your signature moments you must be innovative. Be willing to look at you differently. Review your current information, your reality today, then use your imagination to determine your possibilities for tomorrow. Then apply initiative to make your possibilities your new reality.

Soft Skills vs. Hard Skills

Soft skills are people skills, how we speak, negotiate and relate to other people. Reading body language, running a meeting and leading a team are soft skills. They define the ways we interact with and impact others.

As we mature in our careers or seek upward mobility, we rely less on our technical side and more on our people skills. With soft skills there is less emphasis on structure and more on correctly reading situations and choosing the right moves at the right time.

Think of hard skills as a fixed target with a small bulls-eye. While soft skills have a large target radius, but move constantly in varying directions.

Information informs reality
Imagination informs possibility
Initiative transforms possibilities to new realities
